Part of the Dodecanese group of islands and just a few miles west of Rhodes Greece, lies the wonderful island of Halki also known as the “Center of Peace and Friendship for the young people of the world”. The island is small and mountainous, populated from about 400 inhabitants it covers a surface area of 28km. Its name most probably reflects the copper (chalkos in greek) once mined there. It has only one settlement, a couple of roads, a handful of cars and no disco clubs.
Halki is a very picturesque and serene island, which provides visitors with splendid landscapes and very interesting architecture. It is truly an ideal destination for undisturbed and relaxing holidays, is just perfect for those who want to spend a vacation away from the stress of modern living. With its great climate and its kind people, a trip to Chalki can be considered as a vacation haven for the "body and soul".
Scattered around the island you will find a choice of accommodation such as traditional hotels, rooms, studios and apartments for rent. However, due to the small number of accommodation on the island, it is best to make your reservations before arriving.
Upon arriving at the peaceful and colorful harbor, visitors feel as through they are looking a watercolor, with a scattering of old churches, the monastery of Agios Ioannis on top of the hill, and the charming buildings creating the wonderful setting. The setting is really delightful; pretty houses scattered around a picturesque harbor, fishing boats at anchor, and a backdrop of rugged mountains.
Chorio (Horio) is the old capital of the island of Halki although now deserted. The little port town of Nimborio or Emborio, the only populated region today, is a fantastic array of houses, taverns and shops clustered around the picturesque harbor area. There is a great selection of traditional cafes and taverns where you can enjoy a refreshing drink or meal. Fresh fish and seafood is one of the specialties of Halki, though you should also try to sample some of the tasty local cuisine.
The town is consisting of 2 and 3-story Venetian style renovated mansions, overshadowed by a Byzantine bell tower and a impressive backdrop of rugged mountains guarded by 3 ruined windmills (Vassilakio, Aggelakio and Andrikakio). The town has a noble air about it that reflects its past glory and prosperity. It is well worth to walk through its narrow and graphic streets. Neo-classical architecture, Byzantine Church, Monastery and ruins of an ancient castle are just some of the sights offered on the beautiful island of Halki. If you have the opportunity, you should pay a visit to the charming castle and the ruins of the ancient Acropolis. ACCOMODATION IN HALKI
